Okay, the orange thing...

...Wow, that worked. I managed to eat nothing but orange juice and cucumbers all freaking day, and bleeeehhhh, I felt awful by the end of the day. Stirred up something nasty that was lurking in my cells and oh, man, by the end of the day I was laid up on the couch. I went to bed very early that night, and slept in the next day, where I promptly ate bananas and dates and didn't even look at an orange for the entire day. Now it's breakfast time and I'm drinking OJ, loving it once more. Now I know why they put citrus in cleaning products. Yikes.

Today my OJ also has carrots and an entire head of romaine juiced into it, so I'm eating my breakfast AND my salad for the day in one go. I'm a multi-tasker this morning. Seriously, though...I get tired of salads pretty fast, especially when all my favorite dressing recipes include fat. I'm eating overt fats about every three days at this point, so on my off days I've taken to juicing/blending my greens so I can avoid eating a salad and still get them into my diet. I don't spend enough time chewing my salads, and it takes time to break down those cells and release the nutrients. Juicing/blending is faster, more efficient, and while an average person eating the standard American diet might be losing a crucial dose of fiber, it's literally impossible for me not to get plenty of fiber on this diet. It just doesn't happen.

I'm so bummed at the weather recently...it's been gloriously gloomy outside, but every time I think I'm going to get a chance to take a walk/run, it starts to rain. I've been put out over it until I remembered something: I OWN A REBOUNDER!! I dug through the piles of...stuff...in my room until I could dislodge it from it's hiding place and dragged it out into the living room, where it's position in my fitness rotation has been restored. There's no workout routine as awesome as blasting your ipod and bouncing as high as you can on a personal-sized trampoline, and there's also no exercise that's better for your cells and internal organs. Rebounding will stimulate a gentle detox on a cellular level, and it works even if all you can do is gently bounce for a few minutes. I like to run in intervals on mine, which gives my joints a rest while still providing amazing cardio. I also like to go crazy on it and jump maniacally as high and and fast as I can, which really blasts your heart rate up interval style, and makes you feel like a frantic, crazy rock star.

Get one.

Something fun to try...

I hang out at 30 Bananas A Day quite a bit, and not too long ago I ran across an interesting thread where people were partaking in a challenge where they would consume nothing but oranges and cucumbers for a specific amount of time. There are a lot of short term mono fruit diets that can help your body to cleanse out any extra gunk and reorient your taste buds, but this one sort of stood out to me. I don't know, maybe it's the 50lbs of awesome, tree ripened local Valencia oranges sitting in my kitchen, or the fact that cucumbers are 2 for 1$ this week at my local grocery store.

I'm SO not ready for a long challenge, but I'm giving it a go today, and maybe tomorrow, depending on how I feel. I don't want to use up all my oranges for the week in a few days, but I usually have some left over each Saturday, so it'll even out at the end of the week. I really want to go a few days without overt fats and this is a really easy way to do it.

Oranges are freakishly nutritious, and I'm aiming to juice around 35 of them today. That will put me at 2100 calories, which is a little less than I normally eat, but if I'm hungrier than I'll just...eat more. The cucumbers are getting juiced with the oranges, although I'm certainly not eliminating the possibility of a cucumber/orange salad tonight. I just really like drinking my food, and I'd like to take the emotional aspect out of eating, even if it's only for a short period of time.

So, the menu for today is simple, even more so than usual:

As many oranges I care for, 30 being the minimum, and 2 cucumbers.

I'm also going to get outside under this BEAUTIFUL overcast, emo sky! If there's one thing I love about winter, it's the dreary, monochrome visuals. I'm also going to be working on my new hair and possibly dipping my toes in the creative writing pool to work on something I promised to write for an event. Happy orange day!

It's cold...

It's super cold here, and really, when I say cold, I mean around 60 degrees. I know, I'm really spoiled, but it's cold to me. *Pouts*

I'm thinking about taking a break from overt fats. I just bought a four pack of unripe avocados, and I'm probably going to wait until they're ripe to eat any more fats. I'll stick with fruits and greens until then.

Speaking of overts, I made this awesome salad based on a recipe found in the 80-10-10 book with oranges, romaine, and walnuts. Freaking YUM!

I've also been EXTREME UNCOOKING for various people. Instead of buying presents this year, which really wouldn't have been feasible anyway, I've taken to making delicious raw treats and giving them out to everyone. It's really a two-sided gesture, one which expresses my love for the recipient while at the same time luring them over to the dark side. And when I say dark side, I mean the side where you don't kill yourself slowly with food. Check out these chips I made:

They look NOTHING like they taste. I made them with chard marinated in ACV and a few other things, and I swear to you, they taste a lot like Pringles Salt and Vinegar, which incindentally were my favorite flavor many years ago. If my 4 year old will eat them, you know they're a winner.

Today's menu:

Breakfast: Juice of 6 oranges, 1/2 a cucumber, ginger, and 4 carrots

Lunch: Smoothie of OJ and Fuyu persimmons

Second Lunch: Something involving bananas and dates. And maybe spinach.

Dinner: Sweet raw corn, tomatoes, and cilantro. Yum.

I'm on vacation from school, and yet all the things I've been putting off are still getting put off. It's not even cleaning or organizing or anything lame, either. I've read to get a good start on the stack of books that I'm excited to read, or the episodes and movies I'm backed up on. I'm starting to realize where all my time is going: my kids! They eat up more hours of my day than anything else on my plate right now.

So tired, you guys...

...I get really excited about things at late hours of the night. I stayed up way too late yesterday doing absolutely nothing. Sunday is my cleaning/slacking day, and I love it. Each Sunday I clean for about 2 hours in the late morning, and then spend the rest of the day partying on the internet. Yep. It's epic. But yesterday, I also managed to squeeze in Fire 30 from Chalean's Turbo Fire workout, which is a total blast, by the way. I also spent a few hours out caravaning around town today getting some groceries.

So since I'm so wiped, I'm just gonna post yesterday's food and leave you little fruities to your hippie forest food.

Yesterday, I had:

Breakfast: Juice of 10 oranges, 3 collard leaves, and 5 carrots

Second Breakfast: Smoothie with 6 bananas, 6 medjool dates, and 1 collard leaf

Lunch: Smoothie of 4 persimmons and the juice of 5 oranges and 3 carrots. And it was awesome.

Dinner: Salad with romaine and red peppers

While I was typing up yesterday's menu, I accidentally typed bananas as "bananasm", and I freaking love it. Next time I make a smoothie, I'm going to have a bananasm. It's mine! I invented it, back off!

Living cheap...now with pictures!

It's awfully easy to overspend on this raw lifestyle. There are a lot of books, supplements, snacks, energy bars, retreats, lectures, and other awesome things to assist those new to eating living foods. I think it's fun to play around with these things, experiment and learn and screw up, but the price tag tends to be pretty steep. Pre-packed raw snacks can cost upwards of 7$ for a little bag of dehydrated kale chips. True, they're made from the finest organic ingredients and cost quite a bit to make, but still...7$? Maybe once, as a treat (or in my case, a covert attempt to learn the recipe), but as a lifestyle? Most of us would be broke before we finished writing out that monthly menu plan.

Eating simply is always at least part of the answer to most health problems, from the condition of your colon to the vitality of your bank account. Maybe it's boring to some, but I don't think looking forward to food is an ideal perspective on life. I'd much rather look forward to all the things I'm going to accomplish with the energy my food provides.

Now I'm going to stop being flowery and be honest: this really is effing cheap. Today, I paid 20$ for these...

...50lbs of oranges, which will last me a week and provide me with huge breakfasts and salad dressing, and an occasional meal here and there.

Yum.

Bananas are 5 for 0.95 cents at Trader Joe's, and at Savemart the bags of bruised or ripe bananas are just 0.99 cents and usually contain 10 or so perfectly edible bananas. Medjool dates, which pack a caloric punch, are only 3.69$ a pound, which really lasts me days, since I only use them once a day or so in smoothies. Persimmons are 4lbs for 3$ at my local Farmer's Market. Red and orange bell peppers are 0.50 cents each at the local dollar store, or 0.75 cents each at the Market. Giant bundles of dark, leafy greens are 1$, sometime 1.25$. This is just a glimpse into the possibilities of eating raw in winter. Can you imagine how cheap and easy this is in the summer?

Here's my current stock of persimmons...

...a box, a bag, and a bucket filled to the top. There are deals to be found where you live. Don't whine at me and say, "Oh, yeah, well, it's easy for you, you live in California." Yeah...I do. But I live in Northern California, which you might be confusing with Southern California. That's where you really wanna be. Well, if we're playing this game, you'd actually want to be in Costa Rica. But I've seen people live like this in Canada. Wherever you are, uncover the method of living well in your area. Find that fruit wholesaler, google those asian food markets, and whatever you do, avoid health food stores unless you need something specific, because they sell some epic stuff at insane prices. The only things I buy at health food stores are in bulk bins, and that's herbs and seeds.

Yesterday, I had:

Breakfast: Juice of 9 oranges, 1/2 a cucumber, 4 carrots and 1 stalk of rainbow chard

Lunch: Banana/pineapple smoothie with 6 bananas and 1 cup frozen pineapple

Second Lunch: 6 Fuyu persimmons

Dinner: Salad of romaine and red bell pepper and 1 raw dehydrated cracker (buckwheat, flax, banana, date)
