100 Day Challenge...Day 17

...which is today. Yes, I am still successfully 100% raw, and still low fat raw vegan. But oh, baby, it hasn't been easy.

Let's run off some positives: already I am seeing the beginnings of healing from some challenging health issues that I've had all my life. To see even the slightest hint of improvement in something that medical science has declared incurable is amazing. Awe-inspiring. The fact that it's happening within a matter of weeks is even more incredible. I literally cannot wait to see what I can accomplish in just over three months.

Muscle soreness is greatly improved, even when taking on longer, more difficult runs and incorporating extra strength training. My endurance is improving. I can definitely see why many athletes have chosen to eat this way. I'm burning clean fuel, and my entire body is thanking me by providing me more energy, better sleep, and interestingly enough, entirely different sleeping patterns. I was dreading altering my schedule for school/upcoming Kindergarten schedule, but now I can't help it. I'm waking up earlier every day. It's actually kind of annoying since nobody is up this early...well...no one I know is. I kind of don't know what to do with myself.

Now for the bad, and even the bad is a good in disguise. I am uncovering the TRUE meaning of food and comfort, and exactly how sickeningly intertwined these two things are in our modern, cooked/processed food lifestyle. About a week ago I began to have some strange thoughts. I began to remember things, things that happened looooooooooooooong ago, ten years or more, and I realized that I am STILL completely affected by them. Things I haven't even thought about, let alone obsess over. It's difficult to describe, and even more trying to write about, but there is a definite, STRONG connection between craving food flavors and feeling comforted.

I bet you already knew that, but I don't think you fully understand the deep implications of this reality. It is an ADDICTION. Any food that is processed, or somehow changed from it's simple, nutrient delivering energy source is a poison. People drink to forget, shoot up to forget, but those individuals are a scarce minority in comparison to the millions who EAT to forget. It's not hard to understand that idea in an objective sense. You can watch all the "fat people" television shows and see that it's a fact. But to experience that fact personally, to really get a glimpse of how it's changed you, is something very humbling and overwhelming. I bet I've only scratched the surface, but already I'm feeling more confident that this, while uncomfortable at first, can only be a healing process.

100 Day Challenge...Day 11 and 12

Yesterday, I ate:

Bananas and persimmons

Smoothie of bananas, dates, and spinach

Mangoes and bananas

Oranges

Has anyone else noticed my eating habits changing? I feel like I eat a lot more simply now than I did last week. I'm also eating less times per day, as my meals are getting larger and I'm feeling full a lot longer. I really like eating 4 times a day. It gives me plenty of time between meals to focus on tasks, but I don't have to wait too long between meals. I also don't usually have breakfast until about 2 hours after I've woken up. I take my time and sip on about 1 liter of water, sometimes with lemon, and take some spirulina on an empty stomach.

I know a lot of peeps out there are against supplements, and that fine: as long as you know why you're eating the way you do, I don't have any problems with what research you base your habits on. My personal research and my education have led me to the fact that modern day food is not as nutritious as it once was, and I don't mean back when we were all hunter/gatherers. I mean this: no matter how locally grown and organic your food is, it provides, on average, only 1/5 of the micro nutrients it provided 100 years ago. That means your poor, walk-both-ways-to-school great-grandparents got more nutrients than today's health-conscientious organic buyer. And DON'T even get me started on RDAs...yikes.

I use a few inexpensive, whole foods based supplements such as organic spirulina, kelp iodine, hemp, nutritional yeast, chia seeds, etc. I don't mean Centrum freaking silver. Don't mess yourself up on cheap, synthetic nutrients because they aren't even absorbed well by the human body. That's like relying on cow's milk for your calcium (loling forever at those new "calcium gap" yogurt commercials)- you're shooting yourself in the foot.

Ask me how school is going.

Oh, hey, it's going great, thanks for asking!

If I have to read one more paragraph about epithelial tissue I'm going to start losing sleep.

Anyways, back to the 100 day trial. I'm feeling really, really good, you guys. Really good. I'm feeling drawn to wake up earlier these days, and my body is sending me to bed way too early for my tastes. I usually start to nod off right when things online are starting to pick up, putting a major dent in my online party lifestyle. Oh, well.

100 Day Challenge...Day 9 and 10

Well, it really is kind of annoying to blog every single day...Sunday is my party day and I do nothing but play.

I've been eating the usual stuff: Papayas, mangoes, oranges, bananas, dates, lots of chard and spinach...I'm averaging about 3000 calories per day. I've noticed that I tend to eat a few hundred calories more on the day AFTER I go for a run, whatever that means. Building up glycogen stores, perhaps?

My pants are finally starting to fit a little better, which is nice. I've had quite the holiday season.

Okay, the blog wouldn't be complete without a little grossness here and there. How about we cap this thing off with a little menstruation? Let me give you a little background information: I have 2 children AND an IUD (copper, absolutely no chemicals or hormones) so my periods are pretty intense. I have insane cramping, which started after my first child was born and improved slightly after getting my IUD post-baby number two. However, they are still moderate to severe, although not nearly as bad as some women I've heard from. The worst thing, though, is my heavy flow day. The second day of my cycle is the day where I can't get anything done because my flow is so heavy I completely saturate a super plus tampon in an hour. This, combined with awful pain, is something I'm really looking forward to improving.

Well, that awful second day was yesterday, and I am very excited about the improvements. I'm only on day 11, not even one month in, not even TWO WEEKS in, and my flow was considerably lighter. I had some cramping but I would say it was about 60% of what I normally have. Check this out: I ran out of super plus tampons and only had regular absorbency, and I didn't have any problems. Oh, sure, I was changing them out every 2 hours or so, but last month, I was doing the exact same thing with super pluses. What is this OMG I can't even...too happy to express myself clearly. I will use this graph to illustrate my feelings.

100 Day Challenge...Day 8

Guess what I did this morning! I bought more stuff online :) I picked some adorable little plastic Fruit Beads! I'm going to make 80 10 10 jewelry with them. Don't worry, I'll show you guys what I come up with. In the meantime, you could take a peek over at my blog Kombucha Diva's Handmades and look at the beautiful color combinations I've been blending out of synthetic hair for a brand new dread set I'm creating.

Oh, but you wanted pictures of actual fruit. All right.

Breakfast!! Oh, you know you want it. Delicious blueberries...such a rare treat for those of us who is po'.

Photobucket

Ok, peoples...this is where the magic happens! I really didn't want to share this with you because I thought you might come and buy all the awesome fruit up, but I'll throw down with you for these deals. Or try and share.

Photobucket

It's so great I want to live there. To find it, be in Sacramento and go to Fulton and Alta Arden, across the street from Target.

Yesterday I ate:

Tropical fruit salad with bananas, pineapple and mango

Banana, date and spinach smoothie

Oranges and bananas

Persimmon and apple fruit salad with cinnamon

Total calories: 2852

I had an awesome moment this morning when I finished my run. Normally when I exercise first thing in the morning on an empty stomach I get all cranky and sometimes have a headache. Blood sugar issues, obviously. I prefer to exercise this way, but always hated the crazy side effects. Well, this morning I got back from my run and felt nothing but awesomely alive with energy, with no irritation or headaches. In fact, I had plenty of time to stretch and shower before preparing my juice breakfast, and I'm really excited about this new development because blood sugar control is my long-time nemesis. Perhaps he no longer hates me as he once did :)

100 Day Challenge...Day 7

Ugh. My sleeping has been disturbed. This does not please me. It's really kind of odd, though. I've been waking up at 4:30 am for the past few nights and lying awake until about 7:30 am, when I'm finally able to fall back to sleep. At this point it could be any number of things, maybe detox, parasites, or hormonal shifts, so I'm just going to sit tight until it either disappears, gets worse, or is cleared up by my yearly full body cleanse that's coming up in about a month. Every year I give the awesome Dr. Natura people a call and tell them to send me 2 months worth of the Colonix and Toxinout. I'm hoping to be able to order it before the free Vitamin D sale is off :)

Yesterday I ate:

Fruit salad with blueberries, bananas, pears, and oranges

Banana, spinach and date smoothie

Mangoes

Large salad of romaine, cucumbers, tomatoes, red bell pepper and tahini dressing

Getting back out there tomorrow morning for another run! Gotta find some new stuff for my iTouch playlist...

100 Day Challenge...Day 6

I can't believe it's been 6 days...I am seriously awesome. You know, it's hard to understand the extent of what you're capable of unless you ask it of yourself. Who knows, I might fall off the wagon, but I haven't yet, and I know that it's possible that I won't. Stretching out before me are endless possible futures, and all I have to do is pick and choose which ones I like for myself.

Yesterday, I ate:

Organic spirulina tablets (pre-run)

Fruit Salad with cantaloupe, honeydew, mango and pineapple (post-run). This is horrible food combining, but it was a pre-packaged and sliced bowl I got on clearance at the grocery store for 99 cents, so...yeah. Cheap :)

Banana, date and chard smoothie

2 Hawaiian papayas

5 Pink Navel oranges

5 bananas

Fruit salad with bananas, persimmons, apples and cinnamon

Total calories: 3233 (2833 after my exercise)

Photobucket

These are pink navel oranges, and in real life the color is exactly that of the inside of a grapefruit. I got 5 of them for 1$, and I just had to slice them open that day. They taste the same, but it's fun to play with your food, and you all know how fond I am of bright colors :)

100 Day Challenge...Day 5

LOOK WHAT I GOT!!!

Photobucket

Yup. 4 Hawaiian papayas, 50 cents apiece. No freaking joke! Why? Because they're...ripe. I know. I feel like I'm trapped in some sort of awesome paradox, but it's actually happening. Real life really does rock this hard.

I also found a little produce market in Citrus Heights that had some smaller, slightly underripe mangoes for 50 cents each, as well, and I picked up a few. I swear, it's almost like the fruit WANTS to find me.

Photobucket

Yesterday I ate:

Breakfast: You know the drill. Juice of 11 oranges, carrots, chard, yada yada...

Lunch: Fruit salad of 1/2 pineapple, 1 large mango, and 4 bananas

Dinner: Soup of blended pineapple, tomatoes, dates, celery, and red pepper. I didn't care for it so much, probably because my blender is finally dying and it just can't get it smooth like the Vitamix/Blendtec crowd can. The flavor was good, though. I think basil would have made it amazing!

Snack: 1 avocado

I just got back in from my first run of the year! Whenever the weather gets too hot or too cold, I switch to indoor workouts, but the temperatures here in California are already getting more bearable. I'm easing back into this gradually with the 13 week walk-run program.

All right, peoples, it's time for me to get back to living.

100 Day Challenge...Day 4

Today is actually day 5, but I'm switching over to writing about the previous day rather than try and report on something that's still happening.

Yesterday I was out shopping most of the day, so my menu looks a little different, but it worked out well for me, especially since I walk/use public transport for all my traveling. Dates rule on the bus, as long as you have a bag for pits.

Breakfast: Juice of 11 Navel oranges, 1 inch of ginger, 2 carrots, 1/2 a cucumber and 1 head romaine lettuce. It looks a little something like this, only in a glass.

Photobucket

Can you imagine if I tried to eat all that whole? I love juicing.

Lunch: 5 bananas, and an hour later, 12 Medjool dates

Snack at the bus stop: 8 Medjool dates

Dinner: Smoothie of 3/4 of a pineapple and 4 bananas, 1 apple

I'm starting to make some interesting connections regarding my life and my diet. I'm shocked at the lack of cravings I've been dealing with. I thought it would be awful, but so far I've had no intense cravings, only minimal memory-induced ones that are easily dealt with. However, yesterday I experienced a near setback followed by a moment of clarity. These impulses have absolutely nothing to do with hunger, malnutrition, or any actual physical need for nourishment. They are entirely emotional and perpetuated solely by my belief in their existence. It's my own reaction that creates the cravings in the first place. For example, if there is a particular stress in your life (and I'm sure you, like me, have several), reacting to that stress by coping with food invents the craving itself. As always, you are the creator of everything in your life, even the things that are "beyond your control".

I went online and got about 6 packs of synthetic hair, so along with starting school again, leveling my Elemental Shaman, building my website and business, making those hairpieces and oh, yeah, cooking, cleaning and taking care of two toddlers, I should have plenty to keep me busy over the next...gajillion years, lol?

100 Day Challenge...Day 3

Just checking in...

Breakfast: Juice of 10 Navel oranges, 3 carrots, 1 inch of ginger and 6 large leaves of red chard

Lunch: Smoothie of 6 bananas and 9 Medjool dates

Dinner: Fruit salad with 3 oranges, 1 large mango and 2 bananas

Snack: 2 Pink Lady apples

Dinner, again: Salad of 1 large tomato, 1/2 a cucumber, 2 stalks of celery, 1/2 an avocado and lemon juice. It was pretty good.

I'm feeling all right, not in tip top shape yet but I'm definitely moving towards a better balance. Kind of moody in the morning before breakfast, though. Tomorrow is hopefully going to be a nice shopping day for me so I can get out and pick up some more synthetic hair for my new pink/purple/seafoam green dread set I'm planning. If I'm being honest, I definitely need to cut back on the time I spend sitting and playing WoW and watching Doctor Who but...that will come with time, I'm sure. My new running schedule is looking good, and I'm looking forward to a little more organization when it comes to building up endurance :)

100 Day Challenge...Day 2

Felt AMAZING when I woke up this morning, about an hour earlier than usual. Went by myself down to the farmer's market and back, so a little over an hour's walk. I picked up 2 huge bundles of red and yellow chard for a buck each, and a 25lb bag of Navels, as my favorite vendor doesn't have the Valencias anymore.

I repeat: Valencias are out of season.

I was like this.

Photobucket

Only my hair wasn't nearly as perfect. It IS looking great right now, I have a new set of handmade synthetic dreads installed that are getting me compliments every single time I leave the house. It's a good time to be me right now :)

Anyway, so far I'm feeling light and calm, much better than before. No problems to report thus far. Tomorrow I'll be doing some strength training with Bob Harper the Vegan. That's his official title now. I managed to get a copy of his Super Strength workout, and after previewing it I'm anticipating awesomeness.

Today I'm eating:

Breakfast: Juice of 8 oranges, 4 carrots, 2 inches of ginger and 1 head of romaine lettuce

First Lunch: Smoothie with 3 cups spinach, 8 medjool dates, and 4 bananas

Second Lunch: 1 pineapple and 4 bananas, cut up all cute into a fruit salad

Dinner: Bananas, persimmons, and dates with cinnamon

Huzzah!

100 Day Challenge...

...long time no blog. The holiday season ravaged my life. I'm sure this rings true for all of you, as well. I've been playing with my new Sony EReader and gearing up for my next 2 year degree at GCNM, not to mention working with a family member on my brand new website! It's been a busy few weeks, but I have something new to blog about.

Thanks to some inspiration and a brand new group forming on 30BAD, I've decided to join in and officially kick off a 100 day LFRV challenge. Starting today, I'll be adhering to a stricter raw regimen, eating only fruits, leafy greens, vegetables, nuts and seeds. The easiest part of this is all the practice I've had, listing lazily back and forth between 50 - 80% raw for the last two years.

Thanks to a brand new local market that just opened up a mile or so from my house, eating a natural diet is even cheaper than it was before. No joke, I take home giant, fully ripe mangoes for 50 cents each since no one seems to want to buy ripe fruit. Insanity. Seriously, it's the greatest place ever. I'll have to take pictures for you guys.

While we're on the subject of pictures, Let me share with you just some of the food I've got stocked up to feed me this week.

These are oranges I got at the new market, they aren't the glorious Valencias from the farmers market, but they are juicy, delicious Navels that I got for 50 cents a bag. I bough enough bags to completely fill up this giant plastic detergent bucket for about 3$

Photobucket

3 pounds of soft Medjool dates

Photobucket

Pineapples were 2 for 3$ so I had to splurge and grab 2 for a little variety. That package of apples was 99 cents. I also got another bag of about 8 small local pink lady apples for 50 cents, and my Mom brought me another pineapple this morning, so I've got 3 of them.

Photobucket

I ate 2 of these with breakfast today, they were DELICIOUS!

Photobucket

Some of my bananas...I've been stopping off at my local chain grocery store in the morning to grab the 99 cents bags of "ugly" bananas, which is usually quite heavy. This is also how I tend to get my vegetables and greens, as well.

Photobucket

Of course, I still have a big paper bag full of persimmons! They're all ready to eat but keep for so long that find myself adding them in here and there instead of mono mealing them. They're there in a pinch if I need them.

Photobucket

On top of all this I have plenty of romaine and spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes, red bell peppers, and of course avocados, chia seeds, raw almonds and cashews. I'm planning on giving myself a few overt-free days while my body does it's heaviest detoxing, and then start adding in half an avocado or so every other day. This, of course, can change, as I'll be listening to my body and might hold off of them for longer or add them in sooner.

Day One so far is looking good. I've had a big breakfast of mangoes and bananas, and I'm currently noshing on spinach Dateorade for first lunch. Now I'm off to deliberate over which book to use for my book report. Right now I'm considering these:

Creating Healthy Children

The China Study (obviously)

Sunfood Diet Success System

I'd love to hear feedback about the first if anyone's read it.
